A commonly asked question from consumers looking to purchase CBD is whether there is a difference between CBD derived from Hemp vs Marijuana?  Furthermore, is there a difference of efficacy and quality of CBD derived from either of those plants?

Why is Hemp federally legal and Marijuana not?

The main difference between Hemp and Marijuana (we do not like using this word however are doing so for the ease of clarification) is that Hemp has 0.3% THC vs upwards of 5-20% THC in Marijuana. As a result, Hemp has little to no psychoactive effect, which is what the Federal Government has required from cultivators in order to meet the legal limits.

Firstly, it is important to understand Cannabis refers to a genus of plants which has three species: Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis.  Hemp is not a different species of the cannabis plant. Hemp is a non-intoxicating variety of Cannabis Sativa L., and the categorization of the Cannabis plant has been devised to differentiate intoxication levels.  Hemp is a Sativa species while Marijuana can be all three.

The question on the table is whether or not the efficacy and quality of CBD differs between the plants.  The answer in short, is that CBD interacts with our cells in exactly the same way, no matter which strain of plant it is derived from. Our body cannot tell the difference if the CBD came from Hemp or Marijuana. The question then becomes more focused around the entourage effect: Do the other cannabinoids impact the efficacy of CBD?

There are upwards of 100 different cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant and much of the research of their medicinal properties are still in its infancy. This leaves a lot of room for understanding how they work together and how that translates into the human’s well-being.  Based on the current research some of the more known cannabinoids are; CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBN, CVC, THCV, THC and THCA and research has shown that when used together in a product, there is a lot more medicinal value. This is also evident when smaller percentages of cannabinoids are present, which is why Full Spectrum Hemp which has 0.3% THC is more beneficial than CBD Isolate. (we do not recommend buying any isolate products)

The synergy between the cannabinoids is called the Entourage effect, which refers to the compounds present in cannabis working in concert to create “The sum of all the parts that leads to the magic or power of cannabis”.  Other cannabinoids, terpenoids, and flavonoids may also be part of the entourage effect. We know that this synergy can impact the amount of relief people feel when using Cannabis/Hemp as a remedy for disease, inflammation and stress.

To summarize, there is no difference between CBD derived from Hemp Vs Marijuana, however the scientific community is still researching how the Entourage effect impacts the human, and in order to be certain they must go deeper into the effectiveness of each Cannabinoid on our Endocannabinoid System.

There is more to elaborate on this, and we could go deeper into the molecular makeup of the strains and dissect the similarities and differences, however the goal is to provide a simple and clear outline to you in order to make the most educated decision when purchasing high-quality CBD products!  We encourage anyone who is curious about the Cannabis plant to dive further into your own research!
